VM har startat! Preview article

So, Mike Martin wins the first race then breaks his mast in the second, and Holt runs away with the win.

Kimball's comments on Race 1 and 2 and the viewer experience.

For all those who spent a big portion of their day capsized in the middle of the course, or two-sailing the reaches, I can only say, Welcome to San Francisco Bay.

Whitecaps. Wind in the thirties and at least one gust to 39. A littered racecourse. Only 45 of 88 boats even started the second race. And the two fast boats proved out. That would be Holt/Smit plus Mike Martin/Jeff Nelson.

Martin won the first race solid. In the second race he was together with Holt, way out front, when a breaker wave took out Nelson, who took out Martin, who went off the back of the boat. Went down hard at that point, they did, he and Mr. Nelson. And re-righted the boat pronto, they did. Then – went down again and turtled the boat and stuck the mast in the mud, they did. And that was the end of the day for USA 8714.

The replacement mast was installed before the sun went down.

Holt went on to round the final gate of race two with 3 minutes 36 seconds in the bank, and yes, you read that right. He could afford to lose 30 seconds. And is that scary fast, or what? Meanwhile, Mike Martin – some MM thoughts below, he wants to be the first person ever to win the worlds as a crew and also as a driver – has used his first throwout on Day One.

Almost using the first throwout would be Holt. His mast crimped about halfway through the race, and there was no guarantee it was going to go the distance. Holt and Smit had their own boatwork waiting on Crissy Field Beach.

  • Ett sorgligt besked från Frankrike, Marcel Buffet har gått ur tiden.
Om man ska nämna legender i fiveklassen så var Marcel den allra största och förnämsta, alla kategorier.
Marcel Buffet – Story of a 5O5 champion

August 21, 2009:  Marcel pass away last night
I'm especially sad to tell you all that Marcel Buffet pass away at midnigth from a severe heart attack.
Marcel was under treatment at the hospital Ambroise Pare when he suffered this attack.
Marcel is everyone's friend in the class and will be terribly missed by all of us.
I was priviledged to be a very close friend of Marcel for the past 15 years and I can report that not only Marcel was a fierce competitor on the water but he was also a very sensible man and a great friend dedicated entirely to the 5O5 as you all know.
All my thoughts today goes to his friends and family.

MAJ

Augie: We should start with the story of why I got into the 505's…

Kmccabe: OK

Augie: I had my Star boat next to Carl Buchan all last season He had his boat down here and he was sailing it with his son Jamie. .about halfway through the season we were talking the usual stuff about sailing. At one point I told Carl, I said "Carl I really envy you. You get to sail with your son". My sons are too big for the Snipe and too small for the Star. In typical Buchan brilliance, he mutters under his breath , … "you should sail 505's with them" and then he walked away. I thought, I'm not going to get into 505's at this stage I'm too old and too busy to do that. But that idea started working on me. Then I made the biggest mistake… I sent my sons a clip or two from the website of what it was like to sail a 505 and said hey would you be interested in sailing with me on this boat? Would you guys sail with me? They both came back and said "Absolutely! Hell Yes! I would love to sail on a boat like this with you?!. So I said, "OK well I guess I got buy in from them." So I started looking for a boat then. The first call I made was to Ethan Bixby (North Sails former 505 world champion). Ethan hooked me up to sail in the ECC's up in West River and Macy Nelson was super-gracious in getting me Nick's (Macy's son) boat to borrow for the event. Read on... Part 1 and Part 2
